High School Summer Art Boot Camp Creating a Comic Book

In this one week long summer camp, we are going to focus on creating a story line and images for a short graphic novel. Every day, we will start with a different assignment focused on a particular art problem and/or technique. In the second part of each day, we will be working on developing a short 3-4 pages comic book.

Description

Day # 1 Developing a character and story line

Materials: pencils, erasers, paper, Micron pens, markers, watercolor, brushes

  • Working on a figure drawing from a stick figure to a character
  • Practicing drawing figure in motion
  • Practicing drawing facial expressions
  • Developing story line
  • Designing pages with images and text

Day # 2 Background Art

Materials: pencils, markers, Micron pens, watercolors, watercolor pencils, brushes

  • Taking a walk downtown with a camera or a phone camera and taking photos of the buildings
  • Back in the studio- practicing linear perspective and applying it in drawing buildings
  • Drawing with a pencil and Micron pens and then painting with watercolors chosen buildings, using previously taken photos as reference

Day # 3 Background Art- Interiors

Materials: powdered graphite, kneaded erasers, paper, rugs

  • Looking at art books with images of interiors
  • Taking a walk to the Science Museum and to On the Rise Bakery to take photos of the interiors
  • Drawing interiors using powdered graphite with the focus on light and shadow
  • Working on the comic book

Day # 4 Drawing and painting food

Materials: pencils, Micron pens, charcoal, erasers, paper, watercolors, acrylic paint, brushes

  • Looking at fruits and vegetables arranged on a long table, choosing and drawing favorite ones
  • Drawing cupcakes with pencils and then painting cupcakes with acrylic paint
  • Working on a comic book

Day # 5 Designing a book cover using a linocut and printing it onto a t-shirt

Materials: pencils, erasers, Micron pens, transfer paper, carbon paper, linoleum, curving tools, t-shirts, printing ink

  • Designing an image for the linocut
  • Image transfer to a linoleum plate
  • Curving the image
  • Printing the image on the paper that will be a cover for the graphic novel and onto a t-shirt

Saturday, August 1st, Please bring a plate with sweets or savory snacks to share! There will be an Art show at Gallery 202 at 10am with all the work done during the camp. Invite your family and friends! After the show, all the participants will take their projects home.

Information about drop off:

Every morning between 8:45 and 9:00 am, we’ll be meeting downstairs in the alley on Kirk, next to Glo Fiber, next door to 100 Kirk Ave SE. The gray painted back door will be open and everyone will be welcome to walk upstairs into the classroom. Around noon we’ll be taking a lunch break. Please, bring packed lunch or snacks and a bottle of water. After lunch, we’ll be finishing previously started projects and we’ll be working on the comic book. At 2pm will be time to clean and pack and at 2:15 we’ll be walking downstairs to the back door, at the same location as drop off in the morning.

Small changes to the lesson plans- like adding additional assignments, finishing previously started assignments, might happen depending on the time and work done.
