Description
This art summer camp is meant for middle school kids aged 11-13. The theme of the camp is flora and fauna and through various projects, we will explore the ways of depicting animals and plants using techniques like watercolor pencils, watercolor paint, linocut and monoprint. We are going to look at Japanese XVIII and XIX century artists: Hokusai and Hiroshige as our inspiration.
Day#1
We are going to talk about art inspired by plants and animals, look at Hokusai’s and Hiroshige woodcut prints and watercolor paintings and drawings and visit the Science Museum building to draw some of the fish in the tanks, then we will go back to the studio and create and image based on our sketches done at the Science Museum, using watercolor pencils and watercolor.
Day#2
We are going to go outside and draw plants in the planters, then we will go back to the studio and create watercolor paintings based on the sketches done outside.
Day#3
We are going to learn how to transfer a drawing into a design on linoleum, then we will curve the design on a linoleum plate that will be used for linocut prints on paper and on t-shirts.
Day#4
Finishing linocut prints.
Designing a sculpture of an animal. Working an a clay sculpture (time permitting)
Day#5
We are going to create paper stencils of plants and animals and make gelli mono prints using previously made stencils.
On Saturday, July 25th there will be an art show. Please, bring a snack or drink to share, invite your friends and family. After the show, students will take all their projects home.
